The region is preparing for a significant winter storm expected to bring snow, ice, and dangerously cold temperatures this weekend. Bedford County residents are encouraged to prepare now and review the information below:
Power Outage Reporting
Do not call 911 or non-emergency dispatch to report power outages. Keeping emergency lines open is critical during severe weather.
Report outages directly to your power provider:
When to Call 911
Call 911 immediately for:
- Electrical hazards (such as power lines down across roadways)
- Fires or other life-threatening emergencies
For non-emergency calls, contact the Bedford 911 Center at 540-586-7827 (examples include minor traffic accidents with no injuries or general information requests).
It’s important to note that hazardous weather conditions may result in longer response times for police and delays in tow truck services for minor traffic accidents.
Reporting Road Conditions or Downed Trees
- Bedford County roads: Contact VDOT at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623)
- Town of Bedford roads: Contact Bedford Public Works at 540-587-6081
Warming Shelter Information
The SJC Warming Shelter (112 Center St., Bedford) will be open Friday through Monday evenings/overnights from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Extended hours may be possible next week depending on power availability and volunteer staffing.
Palestine Baptist Church (9244 Smith Mountain Lake Pkwy, Huddleston) is planning to open up as a shelter on Monday morning, unless they need to open earlier. Eastlake Community Church (1201 Timberwood Ln., Moneta) is also on standby to open as a warming shelter if needed.
Residents can call 211 to access the latest warming shelter information in Bedford County.
Waste Management Operations
The winter storm may impact operating hours at the Bedford County Waste Management Facility and waste convenience centers.
- Please check the Bedford County website (www.bedfordcountyva.gov) for the latest updates before traveling to the landfill or a convenience center.
- Weather conditions may also result in downed trees or electrical/mechanical issues at the centers.
Emergency Response Times
Residents should be aware that EMS response times may be longer during this weather event. If significant ice develops, ambulance response times may be delayed as crews navigate hazardous road conditions.
