This position acts as a representative of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office. General duties include enforcing laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as the local ordinances of Bedford County. Applicants must be a current Virginia certified law enforcement officer with a minimum of two years of experience. The School Resource Officer position provides direct services to students, faculty and staff within the Bedford County School system. Between the months of August – May this position will work daylight hours in conjunction with the school calendar. When school is not in session this position will be re-assigned based on the needs of the department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a law enforcement presence within the Bedford County School System
- Develop programs and relationships that will encourage a safe learning environment for students, faculty and staff
- Teach appropriate classes within the school system and the community
- Perform school safety surveys
- Conduct criminal investigations
- Coordinates Crime Prevention programs within the school system
- Conduct other law enforcement related presentations to community groups
- Attends Neighborhood Watch meetings and other meetings of community interest
- Attend Business Watch meetings
- Performs other related duties as may be assigned
Qualifications
- Must be a current Virginia Certified Law Enforcement Officer with a minimum of two years of experience
- Must possess a valid Virginia operator's license with approved driving record at the time of employment
- Must not use tobacco products on or off duty to ensure compliance with the Virginia Heart and Lung Laws
