The Field Operations unit patrols the county to keep the community safe, whether in individual neighborhoods or out on the roads. For these patrols, Bedford County is divided into four different quadrants or “beats,” with the dividing lines being Route 460 and Route 122.

The Animal Control unit responds to cases of animal abuse, animal neglect, animals at-large (such as livestock), animal bites, and hoarding.

This unit is made up of four employees, a senior warden and three animal wardens, who each go through special training through the Department of Agriculture for their roles. However, the Animal Control unit can operate just like patrol deputies and answer any calls, just like a patrol deputy.

The Criminal Investigations unit handles all major crimes, including murder, rape, shootings, large burglaries, and sex crimes (non-internet). Members of this unit worked their way up Criminal Investigations after years of service and experience in the Sheriff’s Office. They receive special training in investigations upon joining the unit.

The VICE/Narcotics unit focuses mostly on drug offenses (dealing, purchasing, possession) but also investigates illegal guns, gambling, and prostitution. Two K9s work with deputies in this unit. The VICE/Narcotics unit works in connection with Virginia State Police and some federal agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.
