The Civil Process unit is responsible for a range of tasks including serving civil and criminal process papers on behalf of the Sheriff, providing custodial transports for court-ordered appearances, and executing writs, levies, and evictions. This unit also maintains custody of Emergency Custody Order/Temporary Detention Order (ECO/TDO) patients and provides transport to mental health facilities as required.

The Courthouse Security unit is responsible for all operational procedures related to security at the Bedford County Courthouse. This unit also maintains documentation of inmates and reports, handles ECO/TDO patients as required including after hours, handles prisoner transports, and conducts roving security checks and inspections.

The School Resource unit provides a law enforcement presence in Bedford County Public Schools. School Resource Officers (SROs) are assigned to the middle and high schools and are responsible for two or three elementary schools. One SRO teachers the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program in all fifth-grade classrooms.

SROs develop programs and relationships that encourage a safe learning environment, perform safety surveys, conduct criminal investigations, coordinate crime prevention programs within the school system, and other responsibilities.

The Evidence unit maintains and oversees all evidence logged into the department’s possession. This unit also assists on crime scenes with the collection, storing, and submission of evidence, keeps up to date on current state mandated guidelines regarding the storage and release of any evidence, and transports evidence to a local lab for analysis.
